Best of times, the worst of times

SO the race I had on Sunday was the worst. I raced Single Speed and I use "raced" loosely as I was tired. I decided I would get in a hard effort and see how the cards fell. Well they fell after about mile 2. I was DFL. I kept on strong as I could as the field pulled away from me. Once we got into the technical part of the COD trail I was bombarded with the sport wave coming up from behind so I pulled over and let about 25 people pass me......ok now I am in regroup mode and decide this will still be hard effort workout and own the DFL. I had a race at Big K ranch about 5 years ago that I quit halfway though and i have a great pic of myself quitting. one thing i found out is that I am not a quitter so i hang that pic in my hop to remind me how i regret that race. so I was having a good time on the course here and the weather was superb. I catch up to this sport racer and start pacing him at about mile 12 and then "BOOM" his rear goes flat after hitting a rock. I ask him if he is good to go and h a tube or tools. I pull over and give him a tube and actually realize I do not think this dude knows how to change a tire. I change the tire for him and he is really thankful. I take off with 1 Karma point in my bike bag. then not 15 minutes later "Boom" my rear goes flat after I hit a sharp rock. As I am riding a 69 bike the other tube I have is for a 29 inch wheel so no good to me. i take a short cut back off the course riding the rim.

ARGGGHHHHH!!!!!!

but I still had a good time and I was racing for last in my division so no harm no foul,

This morning much better. I went out early and did a quick 16 mile ride on the road bike to work taking a longer route. I had left all my work needs at work yesterday so did not have to haul anything. great sun coming up and I was dressed just right. good morning spin.

Helipad and Commute options week

great ride up to helipad again and then the whoops last Fathers day.....first rode for an hour with my daughter on our "classic bikes" ( pics coming)

Also everyone riding to work in Central Oregon this week:

see their site

Between June 16 and 20, local businesses will compete to see whose employees can drive the least. Not content to simply walk, bike, or ride the bus, some local workers have been known to get creative for the Commuter Challenge.

tragedy with the river transport

I got one block towards the river this morning and the wheel axle snapped on the wheel! good thing I was not hauling down the hill. So I will need to see if I can find someone ( I have some ideas) that can build a new wheel setup for this. now that I have had the boat on there I would also place them back a bit for better center of gravity. I ended up taking the boat down in a car and paddling for awhile anyway which was really nice and practicing some rolls in the river.....water feels good. I think this summer I will get a refresher course. I have paddled some class III pretty confidently and a very small amount of class IV where I knew the way around but its been a few years so I need to brush back up.

Zen and the art of Mountain bike

I must say I feel better inside and out when I am riding my mountain bike for hours at a time. So Saturday did trail work with COTA helping change some of the C.O.D. trail, then later I went out for a pretty good ride (only pretty good as I was feeling kind of weak for awhile for some reason??? needed rest? dehydrated???) with Steph.

We went COD up to Storm King trying the new section we both worked on Sat morning, pretty sweet section. down lower storm King to the River Trail.........We realized maybe not a great idea as it was Sat and the River Trail is a popular area....We saw 11 hikers. 5 fishers, and 7 other cyclists in the last 3 miles......the prior 18 miles or so we saw 2 cyclists so have to be smart to pick your trails.

Sunday I did the moto/ bike combo pack and slapped my mountain bike on the back of the KLR .

I rode over to Sisters about 20 miles away and parked downtown at a public park and rode over to the start of Peterson ridge trail. I rode up about 10 miles and then back down 10 miles for a solid 20 miles out and back, pretty easy terrain which was good for listening to the ipod tunes on Shuffle. I must say I hit some of the best single track up high while jamming to Mozart ( right between Foo Fighters and Billy Idol). On one of the water crossings i got over about 70% across and then almost dumped it into the rover but was able to bunny hop onto the bank. Came across the one other biker all day there. He looked at me and I said I had just dumped it and was laughing about it but he just said "oh" and rode off without conversation,,,,,,thanks dude. I noted he had a super sweet red Chris King wheelset....thanks for being friendly.......not.

I think I will swim on Monday. them maybe some long rides Tuesday and Wed? we shall see....but sticking to the zen mantra by Brett.

OLD SKOOL BIZ TRIP

liquid yummmmm

view from the hotel ( nice green trees between the rain today)

So somehow I have three separate things I had to do for work all around the state so I am on the road for 5 days...today I am in Portland and on this trip I went old school. All I brought was running shoes. yep went running and then did sit ups and pushups. also eating healthy on the road so went to Quiznos and got a chicken sandwich toasted.....plain, thats it. What to drink???? well I am trying out the Lance Armstrong backed FRS. I must say the pack of stuff they sent me for shipping costs of about $6 was really phenomenal. The liquid concentrate drink is something I will for sure buy again. Not quite Hornet juice in terms of punch but a healthy alternative to having a light beer after a run. I am not going to drink anything this week just to keep the overall calories.

hitting the killer trails with recent rain

The trails were super buff on Sunday morning and Chuck and Dan and Utrek all hit out for a three hour mountain bike ride. Since I rode the project bike I was quite spent by the end for sure.

Now up in Portland for a few days so maybe I can get some sleep and rest for a few days.
